Accused of Discrimination

"He did what?" you shout into the phone.
"You heard me. He filed a discrimination
complaint because you didn't pick him for
that lead job last week. Why don't you
come up right after lunch and we'll talk
about it."

You hang up the phone, uncomfortable
about the tone in your boss's voice. This
sounds like trouble.

Henry Macias has always been steady and
reliable, but never one of your best workers.
Realistically, he shouldn't have expected
the job. But he did. What now?

Poor Protected Performer

You slam down the phone. Your suspicion
confirmed. Your newest
employee, a minority group member who
got excellent ratings from his last two
supervisors, is a nonperformer. Here you
are,
in the middle of a production crunch and
you now have to deal with this!

Threatened Minority Workers

"Come on in," you call in response to a quiet
knock on your office door. "What can I do
for you?"

"Well, Mr. Paulsen," replies Nguyen in
halting English. I was told something on the
floor that didn't sound right., and I thought
I should check it out. Someone warned me
I'd have trouble if I didn't slow down. I
thought you wanted us to work through as
many parts as we could, but this guy says
there'll be trouble for me if I go too fast.
What should I do?"

Employee Accused of Racism

"Mr. Jones, I know you haven't had many
Hmug employees here, but that's no excuse.
Conrad has been discriminating against
me."

"How," you ask. "He always gives me the
dirtiest assignments,"
Ciao replies. "When
I ask for help, he tells me to get it on my
own -- but I hear him explaining to all of
his men just how to do things. He's made
two notes to my file this month for things
I couldn't do anything about. If you don't
get him to change, I'm going to have to
file a complaint."
