Calculation of Wind Speed
Electricity is generated at 8 mph:
30 mph = optimal efficiency.

Anemometer in Action

Hypothesis: Windy places can generate more electricity than
less windy places.

Principle: Wind turbines start to generate electricity when wind
blows at about 8 miles per hour (MPH); 30 MPH is ideal.Wind
speed can be measured with an anemometer.

Experiment: Have each student make an anemometer. Record
MPH recorded by each student.
Measure distance around the
anemometer (eg. Video model is 24 inches, or 2 feet, in diameter).

  1. Hold the anemometer in front of a fan. Run the fan "low, " count
    the number of times one cup revolves for 15 seconds. Multiply
    by four. eg.
    Video model revolved 9 times in 15 seconds.
  2. 9 X 4 = 36 Revolutions per minute (rpm).
  3. 36 rpm X 2 feet per revolution = 72 feet per minute.
  4. 72 feet X 60 minutes = 4320 feet traveled per hour.
  5. 4320 feet divided by 5280 feet per mile = .75 miles per hour.

    Conclusions: Have students discuss what they learned.
